Land Use Efficiency

Land use is a complex topic and given that bioenergy has and will continue to experience an upward trend, significant quantities of land—as well as water and nutrients—may be needed to grow biomass feedstocks (except for wastes/residues and aquatic biomass). The associated environmental impacts on land therefore, can be detrimental if certain safeguards are not in place. In this section, definitions and metrics are presented for land use associated with bioenergy systems and as well, an overview of key elements related to land use requirements for bioenergy is provided.
