Introduction

Bioenergy is by far the most significant of the various classes of renewable energy; it currently accounts for as much energy as nuclear plus all other renewable sources combined.  The use of biomass for energy is undergoing a major transition globally—a transition that takes on special significance for many developing country regions where biomass is currently the primary source of energy.

In order to understand this expansion and the challenges and opportunities associated with it, it is important to first understand the basics of bioenergy.  This Module provides definitions and explanations regarding bioenergy technologies, feedstocks and applications. It also discusses the bioenergy production chain for various technology platforms.
